Aboriginal Bush Medicine: Healing Traditions of Australia

An overview of the world's oldest continuous medical tradition — Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander bush medicine — including key healing plants, cultural practices, and the intersection with contemporary healthcare.

ABORIGINAL BUSH MEDICINE The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia have practised medicine for at least 60,000 years — making their healing tradition the oldest in the world. This remarkable continuity reflects not only medical efficacy but the profound integration of health, culture, country, and spirituality. THE CONCEPT OF HEALTH In many Aboriginal frameworks, health encompasses physical, mental, spiritual, and cultural wellbeing, as well as connection to land, family, and community. This 'social determinants' model anticipates by millennia the approach now promoted by the WHO's social determinants of health framework. KEY MEDICINAL PLANTS - Melaleuca alternifolia (Tea Tree): Used by the Bundjalung people of northern NSW for skin infections. Its essential oil contains terpinen-4-ol with proven broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Now a global pharmaceutical ingredient. - Eucalyptus species: Steam from eucalyptus leaves used for respiratory conditions. Cineole (eucalyptol) is the active compound, now used in commercial decongestants and antiseptics. - Quandong (Santalum acuminatum): A desert fruit high in Vitamin C, used for skin conditions and wound healing. - Acacia species (Wattle): Bark extracts used for pain, diarrhoea, and skin infections. Tannins are the primary bioactive compounds. CONTEMPORARY INTEGRATION Australian government health policy increasingly recognises the importance of integrating Aboriginal health knowledge with Western medicine, particularly for chronic disease management in remote communities. Tea tree oil is the most commercially successful example of a traditional Aboriginal remedy entering global pharmaceutical and cosmetics markets.
